Starbucks is Closing 600 Stores

Starbuck’s officially announced on July 17 that they will be closing 600 of their US stores. I had a look at their list of store closures in Texas and there won’t be any closing in the Bryan and College Station area.
They will be finished with all the closings by the middle of 2009.
An article over at the Business and Technology pages on seattletimes.com says this:
The Seattle coffee company is cutting 5 percent of its U.S. locations as part of a wide-ranging effort to boost its bottom line and its stock price. The chain is accelerating international growth.
Most customers whose Starbucks stores close will be a short walk from a caffeine fix, the company said, because many of the unprofitable stores were being cannibalized by nearby Starbucks locations.
Apparently, there will still be new locations opening up in the US this year, but rather than the 1700 new stores that opened last year, this fiscal year will only see about 350.
On February of 2008, there were 7,087 Company-owned stores in the 50 states, and 4,081 Licensed stores (Target, Albertsons, Kroger’s, etc), and over 4,400 stores outside of the US. Check out this factsheet.
And just to get a little perspective, there are 8 Starbuck’s in Bryan and College Station.

I was relieved that none of the Starbucks in the BCS area would be closing. It seems like the economy has been taking its toll around here lately. Steve and Barry’s (in the mall) filed bankrupty and may be closing all its 270-something stores, Linens n things is considering bankruptcy, and now Bennigan’s has shut down. At least Starbucks is still going strong around here.
