Tasty Tacos from a Truck

You know wherePost Oak Mall is right? That’s Harvey Road. Go East (under HWY 6) and travel for 2 or 3 miles. You will pass Koppe Bridge and C&J’s BBQ on the right. Right after C&J’s, there’s a traffic light. Take a right (toward Carlos) and in less than a mile, across from Powersports Gym, you should see a Taco Truck.

tacoTruckNow, you have to go during the week between 7am and 1pm. They serve really tasty breakfast tacos and also lunch tacos. They make their own tortillas, and their own hot sauce.

Their breakfast tacos are $1.50, and they are not “skinny”.

The owners are real sweet too. They actually live right behind where they park the truck.

Totally worth the extra few minute drive to get tacos.

Enjoy

Here’s a map of the area.

Los Mocajetes – Mexican Food and Finger Tips

Los Molcajetes over on Texas and Villa Maria…behind the Starbucks..has really tasty food. Their Charra Beans are really tasty. My 3 year old son likes them so much that he puts his straw in the bean juice and drinks it. I tried it and it’s pretty good.

Anyway, the staff is really nice. The restaurant is clean and friendly, and the food is great.

Here’s the cool thing, you might notice that at the far end of the restaurant…the opposite side from where the front door is, there’s a “cubist” painting of a blue lady holding a glass on the tips of her fingers. I noticed this the first time we ate there and thought it was interesting. Then I needed a refill on my drink.

The server brings the drink on the tips of her fingers…just like in the painting. How cool. My kids all finished their drinks as fast as they could so they could get a refill.

Turns out, one of the waitresses started it a while ago, and she taught the other servers, and it stuck. I thought it was really cool.

The painting came after…art imitating life. It was painted by David Garrett..a local artist…who is also painting the mural on the outside wall of the restaurant.

There will be a large version of the blue lady there very soon. So, turn your head toward the restaurant when you are driving on Texas Avenue close to Villa Maria.

I most definitely recommend this restaurant. We haven’t been out there for breakfast, but we will one of these days. Their Beef Fajita Nachos are really tasty, and make sure and try the Queso Fundido. It’s not like queso dip, it’s more like a plate of melted cheese with your choice of stuff to go in it (chorizo, ground beef, etc.) or plain. Yum.

There is a couple of coupons for this restaurant in the coupon book I posted about earlier this year.

By the way, I haven’t seen them drop a cup…yet.

What to do on Your Anniversary

OK, so today is our 14th anniversary. We’ve got a few errands to run, and we’re down to 2 kids this week (the two older ones are with their grandmother).

We’ve decided not to have a babysitter and take the kids with us in whatever adventure happens tonight.

1. OK, first things first…I took out the trash. I also cut the fat off the chicken we were going to freeze. My wife’s love language is Acts of Service, so I think the day started well. Oh, and I gave her a card that said all the right stuff.

2. We need to go to the library because we have some overdue videos. (those are $1 each day they are overdue by the way).

3. Next thing we want to do is go to Hobby Lobby. We have this wooden elephant that kinda got handed down to my wife, but the tusks are gone. We looked up what the gift for the 14th anniversary is and the traditional gift is ivory. Well, last I heard, buying ivory is illegal, so we’re gonna go and see if we can find something that resembles 2-3 inch long elephant tusks. Maybe they’ll have a cool mirror on sale at like 80% of or something. (the modern 14th anniversary gift is Gold Jewelery and my wife doesn’t like gold. She likes nickel free! :)

4. Starbuck’s Vanilla Latte. It’s right across the parking lot.

5. I’m thinking about Fish Taco’s at La Bodega. They have really yummy quesadillas and rice and beans for the kids and we can use one of our coupons.

5. Cafe Capri for their chocolate toffee mousse with kahlua. I think we are going to need a whole piece each…well, we’ll each share a few bites with each of our kids. I just took another look at their menu and I might be considering the Cajun Tortelini. Yum.

6. We will probably go to Post Oak Mall to Victoria’s Secret (me and the kids will be at the little soft play park in the food court). Leigh received a coupon in the mail for free Panties…yay!

7. We’ll hang out a little while at the soft play park in the mall. We like watching our kids play. Plus we’ll get to talk a little.

8. If we feel like we need to talk a little more, maybe we’ll go to Wolf Pan Creek walk around a bit…holding hands of course.

9. Maybe rent a Redbox movie. Unless we get our NetFlix rental arrives today…John & Kate plus Eight is coming next.

But first, I have to work making websites and graphics and logos and flash games and stuff.

Freebirds – College Station Original Burrito

Freebirds is a wonderful place. They make these gigantic burritos that are so wonderfully tasty and filling and just awesome.

The first time I had one of these was back around 1992 when my older brother (who was attending A&M at the time) invited me to come and play my guitar for some of his friends. My songs back then were mostly geared toward Junior High, chock full of body function humor and other things that most people wouldn’t necessarily like.

Well, It was great then, and it’s great now. In fact, other companies have imitated them, like Habanero’s Grill in San Antonio, and Chipotle’s.

Although those other restaurants are good, Freebirds is really the best. They have 4 tortilla choices (flour, whole wheat, spinach and cayenne). Chipotle’s only offers white tortillas and Habanero’s in San antonio at least offers Whole Wheat.

Freebirds has 4 sizes, and although ‘ve seend them make one, I’ve never ordered a “Super Monster”. It’s really big. Like 1 and a half pounds.

The Freebirds Restaurants are on University and Hwy 6, down in Northgate (across from the A&M campus, one on Rock Prairie over by Kroger’s, and one next to Old Navy.

They offer a punch card where you can get a free burrito after you’ve bought 10, and they don’t limit it to the cheapest burrito…you can order it however you want it, and it’s free. Totally worth it.

One of the fun things about Freebirds is the tradition to make a foil sculpture with the foil you peel off the burrito. There are some really creative sculptures up on the walls. I’ve left a few.

They’ve got quesadillas, salads, chips, guac…just a great place.

A “regular” Freebird chicken Burrito will run you $5.75. They’ve included tax into the price, so “no chump change”. Nice.

Now, it can be a little daunting your first time, but just tell the server it’s your first time. Y’ll choose a tortilla size and flavor, they’ll steam it and ask you if you want rice, cheese, and what kind of meat…you can even chose dark or white meat. Choose from three kinds of beans, cilantro, onions, hot sauce, etc. Then you keep moving down the line and get all your other stuff in there piled high. Some items are extra, but they’ll tell you first. Then the’ll ask you if it looks good, and take it off the line and wrap it in foil.

I suggest you stand the bird on one end, then unwrap it a couple of inches at a time, eating it down toward the table.

Oh, the “death sauce” is pretty hot, and their BBQ sauce is really tasty.

Looks like there might be some Freebirds outside of Texas in the future. That’s fun. There’s 4in College Station, 4 in Austin, 4 in Dallas-Ft. Worth, 3 in Houston, 1 in San Marcos, 1 in San Antonio, 2 in Lubock, 1 in Norman Oklahoma, and I believe there’s on in Santa Barbara, California…the original.

Go eat one.

Fish Tacos at La Bodega

First of all, this place gets packed quickly, so either go to La Bodega Baja Taco Bar expecting a wait or go early.

I’ve only tasted a few fish tacos in my day, but these were some of the very best.

Right around the corner from the campus, just a block away in fact. When we left, parking was a problem. Anywhere around the campus is like that, really, but we got there early. And for being a hot spot for students, the actually had the two high chairs we needed for out 2 year old twins. Nice.

By the way, I did feel like my kids were a little out of place there, not sure why, but there it is. (actually, I don’t think they even have a kids menu)

We took all 4 kids and my parents who were visiting for the weekend. I ordered the Habanero Crispy Shrimp tacos, my wife and dad ordered the Crispy Tilapia Tacos, and my mom ordered the Crispy Shrimp Tacos. (We ordered a few cheese quesadillas for the kids)

Those Habanero Tacos were incredible. Wow. Yes, they were spicy, but so worth it.

The Tilapia tacos were the best I’ve tasted.

All the dishes, it seems, come with very tasty rice and black beans. The sauces either had pineapple or mango and were just the right amount of hot. And the Margaritas there are very tasty, although I have no idea what makes a good Margarita, honestly, if it’s sweet and doesn’t make me cough out a lung because it’s so strong, it’s good. We all shared a couple of strawberry ones.

The fish (or shrimp) was rolled in a white corn tortilla, stuffed with shredded cabbage/lettuce with a mango sauce and were so yummy. The rest of the menu looked great too, but at around $10 per plate (includes two tacos, rice and beans), we will probably not be going back often. We’d sure love to, but we’ll have to wait until our parents come and treat us or something. I’d like to take this opportunity to thanks both sets of parents for their generosity and kindness toward us all these years…we love you and love when you visit…not just because you take us out to eat.

It’s a fairly small place, but there’s a covered patio and looks like they have live bands there often.

This College Station restaurant has incredible food, and I definitely recommend eating here…even if you have to park a few blocks away and have to wait 45 minutes.Jorge

About Me

I moved my family here from San Antonio in December of 2005. We really love living here. When we were planning on coming here, we thought it would be like those towns you pass going 70mph on 21 between Bastrop and Madisonville, Well, we were wrong. There’s everything here. From Panda Express to Abercrombie and Fitch, Sears to Chili’s and at least 9 Starbuck's.

We’ve just been so pleased by the people here, the business owners and the restaurants, I thought I’d write about stuff we’ve experienced. We’ve found that it’s a mix of laid back good-old-boy and forward thinking entrepenuer. Lots of mom-and-pop companies that have been here for years as well as all the chains you’d expect from a population of 75,000 to 150,000.
